Ash Hall

From North to South

Close-up photographs of ink, oil and light, where the surface of the paint becomes a landscape.

Oil works made at art school in 2015, during a workshop with Newcastle painter Peter Gardiner. Oil paint was laid over gloss-white board, then scraped back with found textures until the ground showed through as light. The series follows a descent from north to south: angels sent down, a direct line carried from above. The works were later photographed close up.

In 2018, four of these photographs, Insecta, Apparition, Capricornus and Mythos, were published in Communion issue 10, Walleah Press, Hobart.
