Ash Hall

Frost and Ember

A short screenplay. Forty thousand years ago, one woman crosses the ice alone, carrying a bundle of bones and a will to keep going.

FADE IN:

EXT. TUNDRA - DAWN

An endless white plain under a bruised violet sky. Wind screams across ice ridges. Snow devils spiral like ghosts. In the far distance, a line of dark shapes moves against the horizon — a mammoth herd, migrating. SUPER: "40,000 YEARS AGO"

We push in on one set of tracks, smaller, human, cutting a lone path across the frozen waste.

CUT TO:

EXT. ICE RIDGE - CONTINUOUS

KESA (30s, weathered, wrapped in layered furs) crests the ridge and stops. Below her, a valley of blue ice stretches to a smoking mountain range. She pulls her hood back just enough to breathe hard.

KESA

(to herself, hoarse)

Still standing.

She checks a bundle on her back — bones lashed together, half a sled, half a shrine. She continues down the slope.

CUT TO:

EXT. VALLEY FLOOR - LATER

Kesa moves between towering ice formations, blue-white cathedrals carved by a thousand years of wind. She pauses at a frozen pool, sees her reflection — gaunt, eyes rimmed red from cold. A LOW RUMBLE. The ice beneath her groans. She freezes. Listens. Nothing. She exhales, moves on — and the ground SHUDDERS. A crevasse splits open twenty feet ahead, jagged and bottomless-black.

KESA

(breathless)

No—

She scrambles back as ice CRACKS toward her feet in a spiderweb.

CUT TO:

EXT. CLIFF EDGE - CONTINUOUS

Kesa throws herself sideways as the shelf she stood on CALVES away, crashing into the crevasse below in a roar of ice and dust. She lands hard on solid ground, gasping, the bone-bundle skidding from her back. She lies still a moment. Then laughs — short, disbelieving, alive.

CUT TO:

EXT. CAVE MOUTH - DUSK

A dark gash in a rock face, half-shielded by an overhang of ice. Kesa approaches cautiously, spear (a sharpened bone) raised. Inside: cold ash in a ring of stones. Old. Someone camped here once — and never came back for their things. She finds a stitched hide pouch. Inside: dried lichen, a curved tooth on a cord, and a small carving — a bison, no bigger than a thumb, worn smooth by handling. She studies the carving a long moment.

KESA (CONT'D)

(soft)

Somebody made you.

She pockets it and starts a fire with practiced hands — flint, tinder, patience.

CUT TO:

INT. CAVE - NIGHT

Firelight dances on stone. Kesa sits close to the flame, the bison carving balanced on her knee. Outside, wind howls like something alive. She takes a strip of dried meat from her bundle, eats slowly, watching the fire. A SOUND outside — not wind. A low CHUFF, close. Kesa goes still. Reaches for her spear. The chuffing continues, then fades, moving away. She doesn't move for a long thirty seconds. Finally, she breathes.

KESA (CONT'D)

(whispered, to the carving)

Not tonight.

She sets the carving upright by the fire, facing the flames, like company.

CUT TO:

EXT. CAVE MOUTH - NIGHT

Wide shot. The small fire glows deep in the rock, a single point of warmth in an ocean of dark and ice. Above, the aurora ripples green and violet across a sky thick with stars. The wind carries on. The world does not care that she is small. But the fire holds.

FADE TO BLACK.

SUPER: "SHE WOULD WALK THREE MORE WINTERS BEFORE FINDING HOME."

FADE OUT.

END.
