Ash Hall
Isolation
Thirty-six poems, each closed by a single word.
Short poems on habitat and extinction, colour and skin, faith, chess, cats, clocks and the sea, ending with two carols rewritten around a Christmas star. Each poem ends on one word that sits underneath it like a caption or a key.
Written as Maggie Hall.
From the artist's statement: The subject of this work is that of reflection. During these years of isolation, of extreme natural event and out of control virus spreading chaos and confusion, there have been intense opportunities to contemplate and observe the self and others. This work reflects the writing and observation I experienced during this unprecedented period.

The clocks ticking
the fires licking
The surfs beating
a tinkering chime
The other listens
the surf sings
A lonely car passes
the surf beats
A tinkering melody clock’s over
the ticking clock keeps on clicking
The melody slows
the clock keeps on singing
A flame flickers to an ember
though the clock keeps ticking
A cat meows and the fire keeps flickering
the music stops a silent time
The waves are beating though my heart is still ticking
the music stops but my heart keeps ticking
The music stops the clocks are quiet the surf is still
but my heat is still

Pink smoke fills black lungs

Lost minds seek answers

Blind sheep plead in quiet desire
Is this self-imposed insecurity natures presidential speech
Looking down to the quietness of kind, homo sapient minds follow blind
Hiding in silence, Quantum diets challenge a parallel dream.
In blind unity precedence of power manipulates.
Who will stand by the courage of a fool’s nest?
Who will stand under the sun watching as the sky falls?
Who will challenge the challenger’s breath?
Who will wear the fools crown?

Pride
There are seven colors in the rainbow
There are six colors of skin
Genetics dictate pigmentations divide
If I eat too much carrot my skin changes color
does this mean I am any different as a human being?
When I was 10 my best friends were black.
When I was 10 we all played together.
Without question we loved the same we feared the same we grew the same.
The only difference was our color
It is not the shade of a child’s skin; it is the fear a child learns that their adults bring in.
Human kindness comes from within not from the differing colors of skin.
Do you really think it is as simple as the color?
Does it alleviate your guilt?
Does it help you feel you fit in?
Does protesting alleviate your Sins?
Do you have close friends of a different color?
Do you know what it’s like to live life with another skin?
We all began life with dark skin. Out of Africa through divergence and genetic mutations.
Humankind was introduced to a lighter skin.
Blame the Sun not the color of a persons’ melanin.

Shoot me down with balls of lead
Shoot an apple off my head
Do you go to sleep at night to dream of monkeys roving blind?
Shoot me down with eyes of red
Ruby glasses in opalescent pink
Careful how you turn the page
Gold leaves burn when put to heat
Simmer until ready then return to boil
Don’t forget to check the stove
Last night the firemen left me a note
before you lay down all alone,
count your sheep, turn off your phone
But first make sure
you have turned off the stove!

I bought a bible on eBay
I swallowed a packet of seduction
into the hunt
for next night’s dinner
Skinned and cold
by last year’s season
Peppered meat and salted venison
You drank the wine and left
without reason.
To hold each other and never forget
You placed a bet
and our house
became collateral damage
If you look carefully at this improper perception.
The signs begin
now at this moment
of conception.
One cycle from inception
a final bid of devotion
I heard a tune inside my head
having dreams but I’m still awake
Are they still watching?
Are we in a play?
Congratulations you won today!

Enchanting
We found a tomb
that led to a coffin
which exposed an urn
that held a heart
which covered a sin
that in time
was hidden
to hold a man
who held a throne
that dictated peace
which judged a Nation
who worked for food
to feed a family
to keep the peace
and bury the man
who held the throne
which covered the sins
that kept a nation
which held the peace
to cover their stories
that hid the stones
which in turn
would build the throne

We Three Kings
We three kings of Orient are
Bearing ships we travel afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star
They came to visit three Orbs dressed as one. Three Arc angels came one by one. They
came as Three Kings in search for their Queen. To seek solace to bear wisdom to find
peace. They came through the clouds with a sight-read song. To find the little boy who has
lost his drum
Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to perfect light
A prince with rubies for eyes and an emerald for a tongue. The little boy without his drum;
he turns to Time
please, may I have some?
Born a king by Bethlehem's light
Gold we bring to crown Him this night
King forever, queening weather
Over us all to reign
Waiting in a dress of red. Time watches Patience hook up the next thread.
A single prayer. A lost son. A lone promise. A forgotten golden Sun.
One day he will come.
I will wait for him; I will die for his sins.
Gliding over fire in a bed of red wine. We watch over clouds and dance under the Sun.
Three Orbs reading in a castle made of stone.
The first turns to last as the second beckons, to a sleeping star;
We beseech the fourth to move on, that in time as the day comes
we are all free to be
reborn.

Silent Night
Silent night holy night
all is calm all is bright
Jupiter and Saturn will soon be aligned
a Christmas Star through the centuries come
reading at a table and waiting for the feast. The beast has lost his wooden spoon
and hidden my whip
where it’s safe by the moon
Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Tired by rest of heavenly skies
falling asleep before Jupiter’s eyes
awake in heavenly peace
while Saturn stands in your place
double planets melt into one
we praise the lord our savior is
born
Silent night holy night
All is calm all is bright
Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly pe-ace
